ARTECH·TALK | Kartik Sheth + Begoña Vila | Innovation in the Cosmos: The Technological Wonders of Webb and Beyond

image description

Dr. Kartik Sheth and Dr. Begoña Vila offer a unique look into the groundbreaking technology that powers the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and its role in capturing the universe’s most stunning images.

Delve into how technology and science have historically intertwined to push the boundaries of our understanding of the cosmos. Dr. Sheth will highlight the advanced technological features of the JWST, explaining how these innovations have enabled the telescope to peer deeper into space than ever before, unlocking new astronomical discoveries and rewriting our cosmic narrative.

Additionally, Drs. Sheth and Begoña will touch on the broader scope of NASA’s technological contributions to exploration and discovery. He will connect these advancements to real-world applications, showcasing examples of NASA technology spinoffs highlighted in the ARTECHOUSE gallery. These spinoffs demonstrate how space technology has tangibly impacted various aspects of our daily lives, from medical advancements to environmental monitoring.

Dr. Kartik Sheth has worked as a program scientist in the astrophysics division within NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. His current portfolio includes SOFIA, Spitzer, James Webb Space Telescope and the Origins Space Telescope and the Hubble fellowship program. He is the public affairs lead for the division, an IR discipline scientist helping oversee the low energy astrophysics R&A portfolio and a member of the communications team. He is currently working on a special project detail with the Office of OMB.

Dr. Begoña Vila is an Instrument Systems Engineer for the James Webb Space Telescope and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, in particular she is the systems lead for two of the instruments on JWST, one of them the Fine Guidance Sensor responsible for the pointing and stability of the Observatory. She led the final cryogenic test at Goddard for all the Science Instruments and supported the testing at Johnson Space Flight center, at Northrop Grumman Space Systems, at the Launch Site in French Guiana and during the Commissioning period at the Mission Control Center in STScI, Baltimore and continues her support for operations. Vila actively engages in Spanish and English media interviews and outreach activities for the Webb program, including Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) events

ARTECHTALK programming is a free series of talks and conversations with NASA scientists, inspired by Beyond the Light at ARTECHOUSE DC.

Beyond the Light, an original artistic expression of scientific discoveries conceptualized and created by ARTECHOUSE Studio in collaboration with NASA, is the story of how human innovation has enabled us to see beyond our imaginations and into the furthest reaches of the cosmos. The cinematic exhibition submerges you into the timeless story of light and aims to inspire your curiosity for what else is possible.
