ARTECH·TALK | Noah Petro | Moon Mysteries Unveiled: A Journey from Apollo to Artemis

image description

Dr. Noah Petro, a passionate planetary geologist and the Lunar Science Lead for Artemis III, presents “Moon Mysteries Unveiled: A Journey from Apollo to Artemis.” This talk will explore the enigmatic history of the Moon and its profound impact on our understanding of the solar system.

Dr. Petro will guide us through the fascinating evolution of the lunar crust, emphasizing the critical role of impact cratering in shaping the Moon’s surface. Drawing on his extensive research, which integrates remotely sensed data from multiple lunar missions and samples collected by Apollo astronauts, he will paint a comprehensive picture of the lunar landscape.

The presentation will delve into how the Moon, often likened to a Rosetta Stone, holds keys to unlocking broader secrets of the solar system. Dr. Petro will reflect on the transformative impact of the Apollo program on humanity and space exploration, highlighting its groundbreaking discoveries and lasting legacy.

As Lunar Science Lead for Artemis III, Dr. Petro will unveil the mission’s thrilling goals and the enduring lunar enigmas it seeks to unravel, bridging past lunar triumphs with future celestial explorations.

Dr. Noah Petro first became interested in Geology as a student at Fox Lane High School in Bedford, NY. It was while he was a student at Bates College that he was introduced to the field of planetary geology. Noah’s research focuses on the evolution of the lunar crust, specifically the role of impact cratering in distributing material across the lunar surface. He uses remotely sensed data from multiple lunar missions, as well as data and samples collected by Apollo astronauts, to create a comprehensive picture of the Moon’s surface. Noah is the Lunar Science Lead for Artemis III, and the Project Scientist for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
