ARTECH·TALK | Alex Young | Solar Frontiers: Unveiling the Sun’s Mysteries

image description

Embark on an illuminating journey with Dr. C. Alex Young, Associate Director for Science in the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, as he unravels the enigmas of our closest star—the Sun. In “Solar Frontiers: Unveiling the Sun’s Mysteries,” Dr. Young will delve into the captivating world of heliophysics, exploring the sun’s profound influence on space weather, Earth, and human technology.

Discover the dynamic relationship between the Sun and Earth, highlighted by phenomena like solar storms, including the legendary Carrington Event—a focal point in ARTECHOUSE’s galleries. Dr. Young will elucidate how these solar activities, from majestic to menacing, impact our planet and technological systems. Experience the excitement of cutting-edge space exploration as Dr. Young discusses NASA’s pioneering missions in heliophysics, including the historic Parker Solar Probe’s journey into the Sun’s inner corona. Learn how these missions are revealing secrets of solar behavior, from intricate particle motions to colossal eruptions dwarfing our planet. Additionally, Dr. Young will preview the highly anticipated April 8 total solar eclipse, visible across America. This talk seamlessly aligns with ARTECHOUSE’s “Beyond the Light” exhibition, offering a complementary scientific perspective to the artistic interpretations of solar phenomena. Join us for an enlightening session that bridges the gap between art, science, and the cosmic forces that shape our universe.

Dr. C. Alex Young is the Associate Director for Science in the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the science communication for the division. This includes developing tools, resources, and training for the NASA workforce to reach many different audiences. He works with the division scientists to promote and support their research. In addition, he also coordinates this work with the center, agency, and beyond. In graduate school at the University of New Hampshire, Dr. Young studied the high-energy astrophysics of cosmic gamma-ray bursts and gamma-ray solar flares.

ARTECHTALK programming is a free series of talks and conversations with NASA scientists, inspired by Beyond the Light at ARTECHOUSE DC.

Beyond the Light, an original artistic expression of scientific discoveries conceptualized and created by ARTECHOUSE Studio in collaboration with NASA, is the story of how human innovation has enabled us to see beyond our imaginations and into the furthest reaches of the cosmos. The cinematic exhibition submerges you into the timeless story of light and aims to inspire your curiosity for what else is possible.
