ANNOUNCING: Fractal Worlds by Julius Horsthuis

WASHINGTON, DC​ – In continuing with its mission of bringing together art, science and technology, ARTECHOUSE is proud to present the first immersive art exhibition that bridges the gap between the real and virtual world. Fractal Worlds by Julius Horsthuis is a visual journey through mind-bending sci-fi worlds and infinite 3D geometric patterns. Incorporating both projection and virtual reality elements, the exhibition transports viewers to another dimension.

Julius Horthuis, whose previous work has been featured in the Academy Award winning “Manchester by the Sea” (2016) and VFX-breakthrough film “Koning van Katoren” (2012), and is known for his collaborations with visual artists Android Jones and musical artists like Odesza, Meshuggah, and Birds of Paradise, considers his art – “a journey of discovery”, as he uncovers to the eye of the viewer the immensely unique fractal reality. Using fractals to create sci-fi type worlds is something of an outlier when it comes to visual art or motion graphics.

“​The worlds I create aren’t designed – they don’t come from imagination or experience. The shapes hide in the fractal formulas. They exist in a mathematical reality, and all I do is explore those worlds and make them reveal themselves”, Julius Horsthuis.

Horsthuis uses math and infinite geometric patterns to create mind-bending images and films that take our imagination on a journey. In a fractal reality, Horsthuis is much like a director or photographer in which he is operating in a world that already exists and it is up to him to search for the right fractal angle.

Fractal Worlds will open July 6th, 2018 with an exclusive Media Preview, and will be on view to the public starting July 7th, 2018.

The solo exhibition will include 20 mins immersive experience projected over ARTECHOUSE’s state of the art 270 degree projection walls as well as 8 (eight) different VR experiences powered by Oculus​. ARTECHOUSE is thrilled to work with Oculus, the leader in virtual reality technology, to bring the unique VR component for this exhibition.

TIMES & HOURS:​
Fractal Worlds is on view to public starting July 7th (10a.m. – 5p.m.) admissions and Evening (5:30p.m.- 10/11p.m.) admissions.

● Evening and Weekend Admissions include operating bar with ARTECHOUSE’s Augmented Reality drinks.

ABOUT JULIUS HORSTHUIS

Julius Horsthuis is a Dutch visual artist and visual effects designer who combines his years of experience with visual effects and passion for computer graphics to create cinematic animations. With a background in film, his passion for fractal art and artificial intelligence allows Horthuis to be the creator of his own world. Horthuis works with the software mandelbulb3d to uncover iterative complex formulas that are generated by the computer to produce the unmeasurable structures that are fractals. An award winning artist, Julius’ work has been featured in the Academy Award winning “Manchester by the Sea” (Lonergan, 2016) and the most VFX-heavy film in the Netherlands: “Koning van Katoren” (Sombogaart, 2012). His recent work has included collaborations with visual artists Android Jones and musical artists, Odesza, Meshuggah, Tigran Hamasyan and Birds of Paradise.
